Enzyme function prediction with protein language models
An undergraduate research project led under the supervision of Professor Wen Zhang, exploring protein language models for enzyme function prediction.

Undergraduate Student
石钟玉
Undergraduate in Bioinformatics at Huazhong Agricultural University, interested in the intersection of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology.
ABOUT
Zhongyu Shi is from Xinxiang, Henan, China. After graduating from a program for gifted young students in 2023, he entered the College of Informatics at Huazhong Agricultural University to study Bioinformatics, with graduation expected in 2027. As an undergraduate, he led a project on enzyme function prediction using protein language models under the supervision of Professor Wen Zhang. He subsequently began independent research on integrating single-cell and spatial omics data under the supervision of Qianqian Shi.
As his understanding of artificial intelligence and the life sciences has deepened, Zhongyu has become interested in how life emerges from molecular interactions. He hopes to investigate this question through synthetic biology, combining computation and experiments toward the de novo design of living systems. His longer-term goal is to develop new technologies that make previously inaccessible biological questions experimentally tractable.
For his future doctoral research with Weimin Zhang, he plans to use genome writing to investigate the principles underlying genome composition and organization, as well as disease mechanisms associated with genome-scale alterations. He also hopes to integrate artificial intelligence and other computational methods with experimental approaches.
He records his reflections on the WeChat public account 高飞的果蝇.
